Decide what the box must do first

Write down whether the pack is for shelf display, a gift presentation, direct-to-customer shipping or several of these. A presentation box can look excellent in a showroom yet need an additional transit carton. Start with the packed product dimensions, weight, fragility and the number of items before selecting a material or surface finish.

Compare structures, not just appearances

A rigid box arrives as a formed case and can create a deliberate opening experience; it also occupies its full volume in storage and transport. A folding carton ships flat and suits products that can be protected by the folded board or a separate insert. A corrugated mailer is designed around closing and handling, but its actual parcel performance depends on board grade, folds, sealing and the complete packed assembly. None of these structures is automatically the best choice for every product.

Treat the insert as part of the design

For a watch, bottle or mixed gift set, measure the object and any cap, strap or accessory that affects clearance. Decide how the customer removes it before the insert cavity is finalized. A tight fit that makes removal awkward is not a successful sample; a loose fit can allow movement in transit. The contact material also needs to be suitable for the product inside.

Sample the real packing sequence

Ask to see the box with the actual product, insert, artwork and closure in place. Assemble a fold-flat option at the expected packing speed, repeat the opening and closing, and inspect printed areas at folds and corners. If it will be shipped, test the outer protection and label position as part of the same pack rather than judging an empty display sample.

Send a brief that can be priced accurately

Provide the product or a dimensioned drawing, packed weight, target quantity, destination, desired launch date and a few visual references. Specify which materials or finishes are required and which are open to alternatives. Dimensions, minimum order, sample timing and bulk lead time should then be confirmed for the approved structure rather than copied from another product page.
